PESHAWAR: Protest rallies were staged on Wednesday across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and adjoining tribal areas to condemn the killing of senior journalist Mukarram Khan Atif.
The Khyber Union of journalists would stage a protest rally today (Thursday) on the call of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists.
In Ghallanai, the headquarters of Mohmand Agency to which the deceased belonged, journalists staged a sit-in protest outside the Mohmand Press Club against his assassination. They were holding banners and placards demanding the arrest of the killers and chanting slogans against the government for its inability to give protection to the journalists.
The protesters said the journalists had been working day and night for providing timely and accurate information to the people but were being targetted by the warring parities due to their impartial reporting.
They said the tribal journalists were being attacked for highlighting the problems and miseries of the common man in the troubled zones. Mohmand Press Club President Shakirullah asked the civil society and political figures to participate in the condolence reference to be held on Friday to show solidarity with the bereaved family.

The journalists termed the assassination of Mukarram Khan an attack on the freedom of expression and vowed to continue performing their professional duties despite attacks and threats. The traders’ leaders also asked the government to take measure for protection of the journalists.
BANNU: Local journalists condemned the killing of Mukarram Khan and asked the government to award punishment to the killers and ensure safety of journalists across the country. They said target killing of journalists could not deter them from performing their duties, adding that those who were committing such atrocities could not succeed in their mission. They warned of launching of a protest movement if steps were not taken for security of the media persons.
PARACHINAR: Journalists in Kurram Agency asked the government to provide protection to the tribal journalists. At a condolence meeting held at the Parachinar Press Club, the journalists said media persons should not be made party to a conflict. They said that many tribal journalists had shifted to other parts of the country due to the threats but even after moving out of the troubled zones they were not safe.
KHAR: The members of the Bajaur Press Club and local chapter of the Tribal Union of Journalists protested the killing of Mukarram Khan Atif by staging a rally outside the Bajaur Press Club. Addressing the protesting newsmen, Bajaur Press Club President Hasbanullah Khan, TIU Bajaur Chapter head, Habibullah Khan and others flayed the government for keeping silent over the killing of the tribal newsmen. They demanded protection for the journalists and sought arrest of the killers.
